Faecal Macerator
The Faecal Macerator is used for relieving constipation in dogs. It's one of the best instruments we have. It really makes our lives much easier. What's good about it It's a small hollow tube with a blunt end that can be connected to the plumbing of a wet table. Once the patient is under general an aesthetic , the tool is introduced into the anus and gently positioned into the bowel.
Lukewarm water is then pumped in front of the faecal obstruction and it literally flushes the faecals out. It's a much better way to relieve constipation than prodding and poking with enemas and soap or liquid paraffin. The old method took a lot of time and was pretty traumatic to the animal. One thing you need to be careful about is the temperature of the water. If it's too hot, it would be dangerous to the animal. If it's too cold, the dog is at risk of hypothermia. You must ensure that the water is lukewarm-just a bit less than body temperature. It's easy to slide the macerator past the faeces because when dogs are constipated, the obstruction is usually quite hard. The whole procedure only takes a minute or two in most cases. It's fast, easyto use and there's little trauma to the animal. It really is a great tool.
